Water, Oil & Light Assignment 3

A few weeks back in class we were given a topic to shoot called "cd cover".  I had a few ideas in my head, one of them being to shoot Water & Oil
Water & Oil can be a little unpredictable and a lot messy and because of the timeframe we have to shoot in class I decided to go with something that I had more control over and set up a still life composition.  You kinda know what you are getting with a still life.  (by the way,  turned out really nice).

Anyway this idea of shooting Water & Oil has always been in my head, so here I am with another assignment to do for my creative class and what better opportunity or motivation do I need to put my idea down on paper.

First I am going to take some shots to see what results I can come up with.

I put some water into a glass bowl,  which I have placed on a glass table.
I have put some coloured paper which I am going to light about 12in under the table.
I am using my 60mm Macro lens for this shoot.
I light the paper, then add some oil to the water using an eye dropper.

This is my first result.   I am happy with the look.
Looking at this first image, another idea comes to me.
For my assignment,  I want to try and achieve a look of floating in outer space,  planets etc.
I try out different backgrounds.  First up,  some brightly coloured paper.

I got some really cool images with the coloured background however not the result I am after.

Try again...

I think I will use just one colour this time, there needs to be nothing too distracting and I think also there needs to be an element of light and dark.
I used a sunflower as my background in the images below.  I think it works really well as I got different shades of one colour, light in the centre and gettting darker towards the edges.  This is the the look I am after.

Below is the image that I have decided to submit.

I love how the oil and water bubbles are different sizes and the light and shade give such a sense of depth to my image.   But I have to say that my favourite bit of all, is the largest circle with the smaller bubbles inside and if you look close enough you can make out a little face.........  ")
